Lola's Soliloquy

"That piece represents the meandering of my inner thoughts when walking around New York, being stimulated by and reacting to external events, internal remembering and just where the mind can take us all....the ins and outs of the mind and inner conversation."

- Working as a Graphic Designer I spent so much time designing for clients or the agencies I worked for. And I enjoyed it, but it meant adapting myself for each commercial brief. In all this time, I didn't know what MY style was. I always created for others, not for myself.

- I hadn't worked on personal projects where the main aim was to enjoy the process. I couldn't remember the last time I enjoyed having a hobby.

- I've always liked patterns and shapes printed on fabrics, but I didn't know what to do with this outside of dressing myself or furnishing my home. That was until I met Lola.

- I told her I wanted to explore creating for myself but I didn't know what my style was, she looked me up down and said "What are you talking about? Every time I see you I can see you clearly have a style, the way you put your clothes together, you're a very fashionable person!"

- Hearing the word "fashionable" in regards to myself made me cringe a little, I wouldn't say I'm into fashion. I have no idea what's "in this season" or which designers have the best collection on the runway. I think I'm just as easily influenced as anybody else and I also wear outfits that I wore over 10 years ago: and I don't mean certain items I mean the full outfit.

- Maybe "stylish" feels like a better fit? Style is personal, it's the way that a person chooses to put pieces together to present themselves to the world. I love when I see people fully embracing their own style that they're comfortable in, they're dressing themselves with self expression. I suppose I see fashion as something you take and put on, while style is something that's within you and is brought out.

- "Just from looking at you I can tell that you like colour, texture, patterns, layers. If you want to discover your style for what you create, start with analyising your style from what you wear."
